Yeah, yeah, Lock Him Up, but

This goes so perfectly with my previous post today about damage control that I cannot resist. About that civics class – remember due process? and innocent until proven guilty in a court of law? This was one of my frustrations back when 45 was running and he and his fellow spies (see? even I’m falling into the trap), I mean members of his team, lead chants of “Lock Her Up!”

Remember Michael Flynn’s “We do not need a reckless president who believes she is above the law,” statement? Flynn is one of the subjects of the FBI’s investigation into their ties with Russia.

“I have called on Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race because she — she put our nation’s security at extremely high risk with her careless use of a private email server,” Flynn said.

“If I — a guy who knows this business — if I did a tenth of what she did, I would be in jail today,” he added. It will be interesting if he is charged with espionage.

Trump and his team encouraged his supporters to chant knowing full well that Hillary Clinton was not guilty of a crime. She hadn’t even been charged with a crime. She was under investigation for a mistake, for using a private email server. There is no doubt that she made a mistake, a stupid mistake. It really was “careless use of an email server.” Careless use, especially without malice or intent, is not a crime. It’s a dumb mistake. The current administration is still making that mistake, and we all know better now. What’s their excuse? Why aren’t we freaking out about it now?

To jump to “we should lock him up” for a crime 45 might not even be guilty of (much less officially charged with) makes us sound as nuts as those moronic Trumpettes chanting “lock her up” when she hadn’t even committed a crime. We could, however, pursue the evidence we already have (and collect more) and deal with the violations of the Emoluments Clause. We need to start there while we wait on the results of the espionage investigation.

That doesn’t change the sentiment of the meme. They were ready to lock up Clinton long before it was determined she had actually committed a crime. So, yes, they are hypocrites if they aren’t chanting the same thing now at 45 with mounting evidence that he actually did commit crimes against the United States.
