Gluttony Kills More Than The Sword

Octavia Butler quote from Parable of the Talents: “As a country, we’ve given up our birthright for even less than bread and pottage. We’ve given it up for nothing—although I’m sure some people somewhere are richer now.”

People in Houston struggle to keep their heads above water, literally.

We’ve been terrible neighbors lately and still Mexico and Canada offer help to our victims of the Houston area hurricane flooding. We see greed and terribly un-Christian behavior from some in the area while others – Christians, Muslims, immigrants, etc. – step up and give unselfishly to help their neighbors. This last bit? This is the America we love and that we struggle to save from greed, from hate, from bigotry, from Trump and his GOP.

Lost in the constant barrage of hate speech and idiocy of the current administration is a tidbit I found particularly distressing today:

“Trump is promising billions to help Texas rebuild from Hurricane Harvey, but his Republican allies in the House are looking at cutting almost $1 billion from disaster accounts to help finance the president’s border wall. The pending reduction to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster relief account is part of a spending bill that the House is scheduled to consider next week when Congress returns from its August recess. The $876 million cut, part of the 1,305-page measure’s homeland security section, pays for roughly half the cost of Trump’s down payment on a U.S.-Mexico border wall.”Vanity Fair (link below)

They plan to take from those who need it most to build their unless and unnecessary Wall of Hate. Seriously.

None of what is happening is unimportant: damage from natural disasters, the pardon of Racist Joe, nazis and KKK marching in the streets, American veterans being deported, ignoring climate change, the whole Russia collusion/obstruction of justice mess, halting implementation of equal pay rule, attacks on First Amendment rights including free press, attempts to put Christianity in our schools while making college harder for citizens to get/pay for, the GOP working to reduce the tax burden of wealthy Americans under the guise of “tax reform” and pushing to remove affordable health insurance options for those who need it most. . . This list of damage and potential damage to the People, to the country, goes on and on. It’s all important, and it’s part of the whole: pushing hate and division in order to get more wealth for a few rich people at America’s expense.

Call your congress people. Keep calling. Write to them. Tell them what you want; tell them what you do not want. They will continue to take from us until we stop them. Do not count on any of them having a conscience. We’ve elected too many who have shown they have no conscience and do not work for us. It’s on us to fix what we’ve done, what we’ve let them do.
